Rectangle Skirt Tutorial!

This is a tutorial for a rectangular skirt/bell shaped skirt with a half elastic waistband. I'm afraid it isn't the best of tutorials because I won't have many photos but I'll do my best and feel free to ask me any questions!

Do read over all the instructions first before starting, there are alternative methods to some of the steps.

Step 1. Cutting the fabric.
Here's a hint: don't go out and buy the fabric until you've finalized all the measurements. And buy just a little more in case you want to make matching bows. I have way too much pink fabric on my hands now and I'm trying to use it all up :P

You'll need 5 pieces of material - 2 for the skirt body, 2 for the waistband and a piece of elastic.

For the skirt width, choose however long you want it to be - I usually stick with 55cm (seam allowance included, I put in 5 cm because I like doing rolled hems).
For the length of each piece multiply your waist measurement by three then divide it by two (for two pieces - the front and the back. If making more panels then divide by number of panels, but then it won't be a rectangular skirt). My waist measurement was 67cm (I put on weight :P have to lose it again) so my length for each piece was 100.5cm, but I used 110cm instead - the more the better and you have to leave seam allowance.

For the 2 pieces of waistband and the elastic the math can get a little tricky. Choose how much you want the elastic to stretch - if you want the waistband to stretch for 20 cm, cut that length of elastic.
For the elastic waistband piece (the fabric fitting over the elastic) double that number for the length (40cm for me).
For the length of the flat waistband piece subtract the length of the elastic from your waist measurement. I made it a little smaller (so that I can motivate myself to lose weight :P )
For the width for both waistband pieces, double the width of the elastic and add on seam allowance. My elastic was 2.5 cm and I chose 9cm for the width. Too much is always better than too little, as I have learned the hard way.
My waistband will stretch from 65cm to 85cm.
Hopefully you've ended up with something like this?
Step 2. Sew the skirt pieces together to make one long cylindrical piece of fabric. I had the selvage sides as the widths so I won't have to hem them later.

Step 3. Hem the bottom of the skirt. I prefer rolled hems so that's what I did. Rolled hems - folding the edge twice before hemming it - thus preventing fraying.

Step 4. Put the skirt aside for now. Sew the flat waistband and elastic waistband together on both sides, fold in half with seams facing inward and iron/press.

Seam in the middle. Fold on dotted line.
Step 5. Sew the 2 width edges of the elastic to the seams between the elastic waistband and the flat waistband (on the elastic side obviously). Note: there will be lots of extra space unlike the diagram below because the elastic waistband piece has twice the length of the elastic. DO NOT SEW THE DOTTED LINE it is merely a reference to the previous diagram, that the elastic should be sewn as near the center as possible but don't sew the length, just the widths.

Step 6: Sew the bottom of the elastic waistband shut, scrunching it up to the length of the elastic. Basically steps 5 and 6 were to create the channel for elastic so you can alternatively do step 5 first. You can also skip ahead and sew the skirt to the waistband before step 5. That would be a little easier as you won't have to attach the skirt to scrunched fabric (it's not much harder but the other way is easier. Learned this the hard way again.)

Step 7. Now that the skirt and the waistband are both nearly done (I know the flat waistband isn't shut yet) we attach them together. Find the center back of your skirt and mark it, then mark the space for the elastic waistband. For example my elastic was 20cm but my elastic waistband is 40cm, so I will mark the center back and mark out 20cm on each side, 40 cm in total. Don't attach anything though mind you, just mark it. Mark the center front of the skirt as well.

Step 8. Gather the rest of the skirt. Gather once from one of the marked points to the center front, and then gather from the center front to the other marked point. You can also gather it all at once if you aren't afraid of breaking the thread. Just make sure at the end both sides total up to the length of the flat waistband.
I hope it isn't too complicated?
Step 9: Attach elastic waistband to marked area, and attach gathered part of skirt to flat waistband area.

Step 10: Hem/lock all seams (I'm sorta stuck at this bit). Et voila! Vous avez une nouvelle jupe! Embellish with lace and bows! I'm making a matching bow clip/brooch.

Here's mine :D

Please tell me if there are any problems and I'll try to work it out :) My skirt had one bell petticoat from CP underneath it, if that helps.

I am thinking of doing commissions if I ever get a sewing machine. If I do it'll probably be next summer though, that's after GCSEs and before the IB program. I really want to do it :) I'm already drafting designs for embellished designs (once I see an opportunity for a project it gets me all excited and there's no stopping me, even if it doesn't come out well in the end). I'm still struggling a little with pintucks though :/ do I blind hem them or what...
I'd like to do some old school designs, since I hardly see any non-print sweet lolita skirts anymore :/ but I'll also do gothic or classic skirts if there are commissions :D

I also don't know where to post this so here you go, it's a cover I made of Love the Way You Lie part 1 and 2, by Eminem and Rihanna. It was silly but I hope you like it :P Or not.

Here's the link ^_^~

I really need to catch up :P

Firstly, a photo of me in full old school sweet lolita, sans makeup...I have decided that the lace on the dress was of horrible quality and I have ordered lace from taobao which I will replace it with. Will take time and patience... :/

Next, I introduce the doll I had acquired from my trip to Australia. I got her in The Lace Shop in Olinda Falls <3
Her name is Isabella Jennifer Rose :) I made her petticoats (2 layers of tulle and a layer of stiff cotton) and sock toppers.

And I've also decided to make an (incomplete) inventory of my accessories. I've made a few new ones since then though, and I've missed some of the Gothic jewellery I have so I'd do a part 2 for this!

White lace gloves, rose clips (both from Accessorize) and an old Madonna-esque lace glove from Dolphin

Star clips. I wear the blue ones occasionally to school, but they're mostly for fairy kei. I have since taking the photos bought another pair in light pink.

From left to right, top to bottom: White shell bracelet from Spain, polymer clay bracelet from Spain, shell and stone bracelet from Spain again, and charm bracelet from Korea.

Handmade bows for school :)

Ribbon brooch that came as a gift from one of the Taobao sellers.

Handmade rose clip, the gold chain with the black heart is a gift from a Taobao seller, the water drop necklace is handmade and the Gothic rose necklace is from Taiwan.

Both handmade :) white for casual lolita and turquoise for fairy kei.

These are for casual use/fairy kei. Sparkly scrunchies!

Fluffy chocomint-esque clip! Handmade.

Underwear from Spain that are too cute to wear >_<
I've also made a skirt! It was all hand-sewn so I'm pretty proud of it. It took me a mere 3 days! I will be making a tutorial for it because a couple girls on facebook have been asking me if I followed a tutorial.

It's a little plain for now. I'll be adding lace to it when my taobao order arrives next week.

I will post my Ani-Com (sorta like Comicon over here) haul later, although it isn't much :P the stuff was maddeningly expensive for a 15 year old kid.

My mother is still really against lolita and fairy kei - she's convinced that I'd get sexually harassed. Also she whines about it not being acceptable for society's standards - since when was anything acceptable by society's standards? *rolls eyes*

I have been almost gone on this blog but I'd really like to start it again so I might be posting more :)
On my list are a tutorial for a rectangular skirt, a showcasing of my cooking (I have acquired some cooking skills in Australia) and...I don't know! More reviews and recommendations? :D

Long Time No See! Dress Review + General Life + Japanese Culture + Gleekathon!

Phew! It's been a long time, everyone.

I'm still into Lolita! And plus, Fairy Kei and Cult Party Kei as well now ^^ I love the crazy over the top accessories and the fact that petticoats are worn on the outside (I don't have good fairy kei pettis though - I've only white ones!) Also the peignoirs and crosses got me into cult party kei :) I expected to be more of a gothic lolita but turned out to be more sweet. Still gothic sometimes though.

I wish I could wear makeup...I'm not old enough yet, just 14. I'd have to wait a few more years! I'm just allowed to wear lip gloss now. Tough luck :/ I won't wear it with lolita though, my eyes would all but disappear if so.

My ordered dress has not arrived! Well that was a waste of money and time. But I have ordered another one ^^ pictured below

A Taobao replica of the Chiffon Angelic Princess JSK by AP.
I like blue - I look slimmer in it :D The dress was beautiful, with only a little stain on the waistline that's barely noticable and the quality of chiffon is good. Some of the lace is bad lace and some is good, but it'll do. The bow ribbons though...shiny, shiny nylon. A no-no. I may or may not replace them with grosgrain ribbons.
I've also ordered a couple other things from Taobao (and received a couple)...I'll do another post on that.

I've been watching anime. The first three seasons of Rozen Maiden and half of the fourth - I found it too boring and stopped watching it. My favorite is Hina Ichigo, she's so cute! Shinku is also really great. I think I'm a cross between Shinku, Hina Ichigo and Suiseiseki, based on personality. Also, Black Butler is amazing. Lady Elizabeth is so adorable! It's funny...a year ago I thought anime was stupid and Japanese culture was lame. Now I love it! I couldn't speak Japanese though. When I have mastered my French I might learn it.

On a side note, I will be visiting the Hong Kong Ani-com with my friends this year! It's our first year for all of us, I'm not really sure what to expect - but I'm sure it'll be fun, won't it?

I have also been going crazy on Pinterest. Which makes me want to DIY and make plushies and amigurumi! Yay! I have stalked every single lolita or fairy kei diy pinterest board there is!

I hope I get a sewing machine for my birthday! I'd really like one so I don't have to hand sew everything which takes ages. I have hand sewn a Red Riding Hood cloak out of costume satin before just for fun :P It's tiring to hand sew everything though. I have given up on making skirts because the hemming is torture.

I have also made a lamp out of a petticoat and MDF with an LED light but that's a work in progress...I'll post pictures up! It's an awesome school project!

I'm still busy with school and stuff (yup, still a few days left, holidays start late over here) but I'll post more often I promise - at least once a week!

Does anyone watch Glee anymore? They're doing reruns now :) I had a Gleekathon the other day and watched 10 episodes (from Season 2, although I skip the episodes I dislike - I know them by heart anyway!) in one go! New record!

I'll do a post tomorrow showing my crafts! And may do reviews.

General Update + Top 20 Songs + Movie Review

Hi all my lovelies!

Sooooooo...it's exam season and I've my exams coming in a month's time. I might be updating less as a consequence but I will try to do so as often as I can!

I'm also considering making an apron and trying out a shiro maid lolita look...I'll see what I come up with! It's quite a lot of hand sewing since I don't have a sewing machine :(
I'm planning to use this tutorial http://sew-loli.livejournal.com/395156.html I hope it turns out well!

I've also tried wearing my petticoat out! I wore the A-Line one under my tartan patched skirt that was in this blog post. It went pretty well except for that I was afraid of my petti peeking and also it was raining so I had to take it off :/ but I loved wearing it!

Here are my Top 20 songs! (I had to pick them carefully, there are too many new songs I love! 10 wasn't enough!)
1. Let Her Go - Passenger
2. Aitakatta - AKB48
3. Milk Tea - Ramen King
4. Candy Candy - Kyary Pamyu Pamyu (She always says it like 'Ghandi Ghandi' ^^)
5. Hapi Hapi Morningu - Pa-letee (I must learn the dance someday!)
6. G.U.Y. - Lady Gaga (The song not that good but I love the dance)
7. My Humps - The Black Eyed Peas (The downfall of mainstream music in all its glory that is just so ridiculously catchy)
8. Little Me - Little Mix
9. Let Go For Tonight - Foxes (I love Foxes, her songs are so strong)
10. Swagger Jagger - Cher Lloyd
11. We'll Be Back For More - Nina Nesbitt (A truly superb artist - highly recommended)
12. Fancy - Iggy Azalea
13. Milkshake - Kelis (Old, gold and dirty)
14. Chandelier - Sia (The music video is just breathtaking)
15. Gomenasai - t.A.T.u (amazing band and amazing music, it's such a shame they split)
16. Hey Mickey - Toni Basil
17. Great DJ - The Ting Tings
18. PONPONPON - Kyary Pamyu Pamyu
19. Our Time - Lily Allen
20. Selfies - Nina Nesbitt

I watched The Amazing Spiderman 2! It was good but I simply did not enjoy it because
a) The villain was hotter than the hero and it sorta defeats the point
b) Gwen Stacy died!
I pretty much just went to watch it for the romance storyline. I know that she dies, but it's so upsetting!
Sorry, Peter. *sobs quietly*

Bye bye, Gwen, darling.

By chance has anyone seen the latest episode of glee that features Kurt as Peter Pan? I totally adore it :) Check it out for yourself here.

And gifs of the day! ^^
Which brand?

Because ballet is amazing. And Dance Of The Cygnets is my favorite.

Sometimes there are certain people I want to do this to.

Woah Agnes stop shaking my buddy!

Music Review: Save Rock and Roll! + Top 10 Songs

Hello all my lovelies!

Today I will be bringing you a review of the album Save Rock and Roll by Fall Out Boy! (It will be a VERY brief review as I am really lazy ^^ )

1. The Phoenix
This is a great song and coincidentally my first FOB song! I love the lyrics especially, it's very poetic. The bridge reminds me a little of OneRepublic's Counting Stars.

2. My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light 'Em Up)
I prefer the version sung with Taylor Swift at the Victoria Secret Fashion Show. The FOB plain version is pretty good, but Taylor adds that bit of edge that they're lacking. (Don't hate on me for this. So many people hate the Taylor version for no reason other than that she is mainstream or country.)

3. Alone Together
A bit more toned down than the other songs, it's pretty good but the lyrics are really confusing. Also for some weird reason this song reminds me of Demi Lovato.

4. Where Did The Party Go
One of the songs that I don't like that much. The track itself is nice - upbeat and loud. But the lyrics aren't that well-written. (although it's hard to find really well written songs.)

5. Just One Yesterday
Yay Foxes! This song is amazingly emo. I like it so much but the video really disappointed me, I feel like they should have given Foxes a larger part in it.

6. The Mighty Fall
The song is good. Great, even. But there's just one problem: I don't like Big Sean or his mediocre rapping. Especially now that he has broken off his engagement to Naya Rivera.

7. Miss Missing You
I'm assuming that this song is to the haters that were their fans at one point? That's all I can figure out from the song. I do really like the line 'The person that you'd take a bullet for is behind the trigger' though.

8. Death Valley
I dislike this song, it's my least favorite of all in the album. It's forgettable and really, too simple for Fall Out Boy.

9. Young Volcanoes
I enjoy this song so much that I had once debilitated over making a cover for it, but I decided that there was no way I could match Fall Out Boy's awesomeness. The Tiffany Alvord cover is absolute proof of that (I love her covers, but this one is just...)

10. Rat a Tat
Yay to this song because Courtney Love is absolute badass. Her part just makes the song that much better. And the video is great too. The only part I got a little freaked out was when Andy died. And when Patrick destroyed the guitar my heart broke :(

11. Save Rock and Roll
Pretty good song, although I didn't really see any point in using Elton John's vocals. Also I'm vaguely interested in who sang the intro. Lol randomness ;)

Overall the album is a 8.5/10 for me, not bad! And as a bonus this hilarious gif (because I am in love with gifs):

Top 10 songs:
1. Lolitina - Misako Aoki (I can't believe I missed out on this one!)
2. Clarity - Zedd feat. Foxes
3. Son of a Gun - Oh Land
4. Grenade - Ariana Grande cover
5. Let Her Go - Passenger
6. Brave - Sara Bareilles
7. Fly Me To The Moon - Jason Mraz cover
8. Wake Me Up When September Ends - Green Day
9. Timber - Pitbull feat. Kesha
10. Shatter Me - Lindsey Stirling feat. Lzzy Hale
As you see most of my songs are somewhat more gentler this week.
Fun fact about my brother: He mixed up the JPOP girl band AKB48 and the gun AK-47 ^_^

Photo Dump!

Hi all my lovelies!

First off, I've made a headbow! (Or hairbow.)
It was some scrap cloth I had, I'm guessing that it's cotton...and there was some small lace left over from various crafts.
Do excuse my face!
Me with the hairband on! (Messy hair ><) And yess that's my hideous school uniform...
A perfectly good hairband for school.
Close up of the bow. I know that the middle bit is too long, I'll try to change it next time ><

Next, part of my Taobao stuff arrived! All of the jewellery was lovely :) and I adore my petticoats! Now I'm saving up my money to pay Dolphin back T_T
That's me. I was not able to selfie any pic that shows me full length and I was just excited to show the petti poof but I guess it didn't come out very good :/ behind me you can see my messy and non-loli wardrobe...also I do love my skirt although it is not loli...it could be causal punk lolita though if I pair it with a black blouse (the right black blouse of course)
I also got some stuff from Accessorize on a trip with Rainbow and several other friends, I got a pair of lace gloves and two fabric flower hair clips ^^
Soft and lacy!
Me with the flower clip...oh gosh I look chubby >< (oh well)
Last but not least I found a fan in my pile of junk ^^ It is sort of loliable I guess if paired with qi-lolita or wa-lolita (I think wa-lolita is more suitable as I got this in Japan?)
Bonus: A pic of Rainbow (Lettie is her real name in case anyone was wondering) and me when we hung out in Easter!

Favorite Song: Hollaback Girl by Gwen Stefani or Hello Kitty by Avril Lavigne. (I love her decora music video but everyone says she's copying Gwen Stefani's Harajuku Girls...no way :/ Gwen Stefani is a lot more creative but Avril is just cute ^_^)

Music: Top 10 List!! + Update on Taobao Order + Movie and Book Reviews

Hi all my lovelies!

I've decided to make top 10 lists here, this is my first one :) they won't be weekly or anything, just when I want to make them.

1. High Hopes - Kodaline (I can play this on guitar!)
2. Don't Let Go - Lea Michele (I'm really hoping this would be her third single. I can't wait for the On My Way music video!)
3. Sunburn - Ed Sheeran (This is a recommended song from Rainbow. It reminded her of someone special to us and brings up so many memories. *sighs in nostalgia and wipes tear from eye*)
4. Shake It Out - Glee - Santana, Mercedes and Tina (I haven't listened to the original version but this is impressive.)
5. Drunk On You - Luke Bryan (Another song I can play on guitar. I love the country-ness of it)
6. Hollaback Girl - Gwen Stefani (Addictive song warning!)
7. Piano - Ariana Grande (One of the newer songs I love. This one stood out to me from all the other songs of the Yours Truly album. Oooh I might do a review on that album soon!)
8. Under the Sheets - Ellie Goulding (Very old. But a classic Ellie song. My first one in fact.)
9. Animal - Glee - The Warblers (I danced to the original version in for a cheerleading routine and I was SO overjoyed to find that Glee had a version.)
10. Rat a Tat - Fall Out Boy feat. Courtney Love (I fell in love with this after watching the Young Blood video. I love the whole Save Rock and Roll Album!)

I'm fully aware that some of these aren't new songs :) but I love revisiting old ones...

Update on the Taobao order:
I changed the shoes to these and the size to 38, these are from Angelic Imprint and I ordered them in white.
Ordered this in addition to the bell shaped one because I have no idea which one to use on my dress.
Ordered two of these in dark red from Thorn Bird, they were pretty cheap.
Also from Thorn Bird, still dark red, I read from reviews that the rose would be smaller, but I don't mind.
From RedMaria*Lolita, also in red :)
I know the accessories don't seem to correspond much with my white colors of my dress and shoes but I'm planning to buy a black blouse at Anna House soon when I have money ^^  (and I don't even have to wait for shipping since I'm going to the physical shop! Yay!)

I went to see Captain America: The Winter Soldier today and I have to say it's a 10/10. Absolute perfection and Natasha was totally kickass. Also I totally ship her and Nick Fury.
Aww! Now I'm hungry...
I also watched I Am Number Four (Starring Dianna Agron) yesterday and I loved it. 9/10, the movie wasn't as good as the book. (yeah I read the book too.) For me it was all about Dianna anyway. But killing Henri off halfway was just mean.
Her beauty...I can't even...
By the way has anyone read the Land of Stories by Chris Colfer? I love the first book! (It's a little kiddie for a fourteen year old, but hey, IT'S CHRIS COLFER! How bad can it be?)
Love the book, but love the guy more.
